Futura2000

Futura2000 is a distinguished member of the graffiti community, who has been tagging for 30 some years. As a side project, Futura has created a variety of conceptual websites, most notably www.futura2000.com, which acts as a visual calender. The website in essence is a blog, where an image is uploaded each day of the year, which eventually fills out a calendar. It has been around for an unknown amount of time, but has a clear visual sense of color and design that makes the layout visually interesting, along with the photos that correspond to each day. I really like the idea of keeping a daily photo journal, that appears very anonymous, but has interesting visual elements that are outside of the realm of standardized blogs.

Cool website designs

ttp://www.subway-life.com/ and http://www.eugeniomerino.com/ are two very engaging websites for visual artists that play as another element of their artwork.

Antonio Jorge Goncalves is an interesting artist who sketches and drawings of people in subway stations around the world. He stays at each city for an average of 3 weeks, and produces around 300 drawings from each trip. His website is visually interesting, because it works as an alternative map of subway-systems, creating his own to connect different cities together. The website thus become very interactive, while also displaying his artwork, bio, and information about the project in the forms of subway stops.

Eugenio Merino's website, though very simple in design, is highly fun to play around with, incorperating his artworks as the central figure that word bubbles string off of to guide you around the site. The first one that I had seen was that of his Mr. Melon, a playoff of Mr. Potatohead. Through simplicity, Eugenio is able to have an effective visual element, along with interactive element that makes his site interesting to explore.

The Letter K

The Letter K comes from the Sernitic symbol of an open hand and the Egyptian hieroglyphic of a hand.

This lead me to directly link the symbolism of the letter K, to thinking about Braille and Sign Language. Both of these forms of communication use the hand as the source of communication.

There is a strong correlation between the three forms of communication, whether it be visual, written, or felt, they all deal with the hand and its motion.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer is a new media artist focusing in interactive installations. His work, Vectorial Elevation, is one of the largest of these interactive installations. Between 1999 and 2004, the work was displayed in four different cities. The work consists of searchlights along with various new media technologies, which aloud the audience to control a design for the lights and their movement. The work defines a term, "relational architecture" for the artist, while allowing the audience to become part of the process and bring their own thoughts to the work. What is compelling about Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's work is that he is able to take these new media technologies, and take them off the computer screen and into the real world. However, he is still able to keep the balance between both worlds by relying on the computer and user to create the patterns and movement of the lights. By allowing anyone to participate in the work, it makes a fairly selective work because of its location, visible and interactive to the whole Internet using world. Similarly to the work Tribute in Light, a 2002 memorial for the victims of 911, searchlights and new media technologies are able to bring these technology into play in creating monumental works of art.
